Benefits of a Social Security Consultant

Tuesday, May 13, 2014

A big question everyone has is why should I see a Social Security consultant. Social Security is a lifetime benefit and the decisions you make when applying determine what you will receive throughout your lifetime.

With the exception of cost of living increases (COLA) that is what you will receive from that point forward. Cost of living increases have ranged from 14.3% to 0%. Most recently the COLA’s have averaged around 2.5% to 3% and the COLA for the past two years was 0%.

Once you take your benefits you also cap the amount you will leave for any survivors on your record. A Social Security consultant can help you look at all kinds of factors that you need to take into consideration before starting your retirement benefits. You want to look at your health, your financial health, and your family history. No one can tell you when you will pass away, but you need to consider what will happen throughout your life.

Questions such as…how long will it take for me to recover benefits given up to receive a higher monthly benefit amount?…what option will give me the most benefits over my expected lifetime?…how much will I leave my spouse if they survive me? These are the questions a Social Security consultant is qualified to discuss with you.

The Social Security Administration has determined that for individuals age 65 today, 10% will live to age 95 or older. That also means an even higher percentage of people will live to their 90’s and 80’s. This makes seeing a Social Security consultant to maximize your monthly benefit is of great importance.

The Social Security Administration assumes you have done your homework, have considered all your options and know what you want to do when you get ready to file for retirement. In fact, the Commissioner of Social Security has instructed employees of the Social Security Administration not to have that discussion with you.

So the reason you should see a Social Security consultant is to insure you know all of the options available to you, what those options mean to your future and insure you make the decision that is best for you.
