Children's Social Security Benefits

Thursday, June 29, 2017

Everyone makes plans for their future but very few think to make a plan for their Social Security benefits. Premier Living has created a Make A Plan checklist outlining 10 things you should know before you file for your Social Security benefits. The first item on the checklist is “Are there any children that may be eligible for SS benefits based on a parent’s record”.

This is important because it impacts how much your family will receive when you retire, become disabled or die. A child under the age of 18 may be eligible for a monthly benefit from your work record. If the child is over the age of 18 and still in high school they may be able to continue their benefits until they graduate or reach age 19. If you have children under the age of 16 your spouse may also be eligible for monthly benefits until the youngest child reaches the age of 16. If you have a child who became disabled before the age of 22, they may be eligible for a monthly benefit from your record which includes entitlement to Medicare after receiving a disability benefit for 24 months.

There is a lot to consider when you are thinking about filing for Social Security benefits. This is just one situation that can impact your decision on when to file. We will discuss all the options on the “Make A Plan” checklist over the coming weeks. Please do not make a decision about filing for Social Security benefits without first making a plan. If you don’t make your plan you risk receiving a benefit that is less per month and over your lifetime than you are eligible to receive.

FEATURED TESTIMONIAL

There were a few scenarios that neither one of us (husband and wife) was aware of. We probably would have picked the wrong one . . . It’s a significant difference depending one he one you pick.
