Have You Heard of the Restricted Application?

Wednesday, July 26, 2017

Married couples have an interesting choice when deciding when to file for benefits. When you reach your full retirement age you have an option to delay taking benefits on your own work record so you can earn delayed retirement credits and still possibly receive a Social Security benefit. This is called a restricted application.

There are 3 criteria that must be met to file the restricted application. First, you must be at your full retirement age or older. Second, your spouse must have filed an application for Social Security benefits which can include the option known as ‘claim and suspend’, and third, you cannot have filed an application for Social Security benefits on your own work record.

The success of this strategy will vary between couples but it is a great strategy to maximize your Social Security benefits. You should consider this option before you file. I always get the question, “can we both claim and suspend and then each file a restricted application on each other?” It would be nice but the answer is no. Remember, one of the criteria is that you haven’t filed an application for benefits on your own work record.

FEATURED TESTIMONIAL

There were a few scenarios that neither one of us (husband and wife) was aware of. We probably would have picked the wrong one . . . It’s a significant difference depending one he one you pick.
