Social Security Service Online

Tuesday, April 8, 2014

Finding Social Security advice online is not as easy as it may seem. Information is available through the Social Security website but the options are limited. Certainly you can apply for Social Security benefits such as retirement, spouse’s benefits, disability benefits, appeals of a disability decision, and Medicare.

You can locate an office near where you live and even get a benefit estimate for when you think you want to retire. If you are already receiving Social Security benefits you can take a number of actions including changing your address, request a new Medicare card, request proof of income, etc.

What you cannot do is ask specific questions related to your own benefits...

They do not want you to send your personal information including your Social Security number because doing so is not secure. They do have a list of frequently asked questions but these are not specific to your personal Social Security record. The Social security website is a good site for general information and for filing for benefits but not for getting advice.

Not only are you restricted from getting personal Social Security advice online, but you also cannot get information about the options available that should be considered before you file. You need to contact a Social Security consultant to discuss these options before you file.

Once you file for benefits you are locked in to that benefit with few options available to make any changes to your benefit. You can contact a consultant online to start the process but you should make sure all the personal information you provide is over the phone or by fax. Other than a personal meeting, this is the safest way to communicate your information.
